Aurora firefighter Jason Murphy was killed early Friday morning after being struck on his bicycle by a pickup truck. According to sources at 9news.com, the driver of the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup, 49-year-old William Nale, told authorities that he was unable to see Murphy in the marked crosswalk due to the morning sun. The accident happened in Aurora near Summit Elementary School. Aurora Fire says Murphy was on his way to work at 7:30am when he was struck. Murphy passed away shortly after being taken to a local hospital for serious injuries. Police say Nale was cited for careless driving resulting in death and failing to provide proof of insurance.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, several hundred cyclists are killed in traffic accidents every year, and more than one in five deaths is the result of a collision with a vehicle at an intersection. In many cases, the accident occurred because the driver did not see the cyclist. Because cyclists have very little protection, it is important for both the driver, and the cyclist to proceed with caution and pay close attention when entering crossing zones or intersections. Colorado law requires all vehicles to stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk.
