The Denver Post reported an accident where an RTD Bus hit a pedestrian. The bus that hit him was the 15 Limited and was turning left from southbound Broadway onto East Colfax Ave. The eyewitness said that he was an arm’s reach away from the man when the accident happened. The witness said that the man had waited for a car in front of the bus to pass, then he stepped out in front of the on coming RTD Bus. The witness insisted that the pedestrian stepped out in front of the bus on purpose. The driver of the bus was shocked but not injured. The man was rushed to a hospital but no other details about his injuries have been released.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that in 2010, over 4,000 pedestrians were killed in pedestrian-car collisions. Over 70,000 pedestrians were injured in 2010. This means that a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes in 2010. The most common time for pedestrian-car accidents to occur is during the nighttime, over 68% of pedestrian fatalities occurred at night. Most people are out enjoying the weather on nice days in Colorado. That coincidentally is when over 80% of pedestrian fatalities occurred. Almost three-fourths of pedestrian fatalities occurred in an urban setting versus a rural setting.  This means that the highest chance you have of being in a pedestrian-car accident is when in cities on a clear sunny day. It is important as a pedestrian to decrease your chances of being hit by obeying the pedestrian laws and crossing signals. However, children 15 and young accounted for 7% of the pedestrians killed by motor vehicles. As a driver it is important to always check for pedestrians in blind spots and in crosswalks. There were over 51,000 accidents that involved buses in 2005 according to National Transportation Statistics. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that commercial vehicles accidents accounted for nearly 5,000 fatalities in in 2006.

Aurora firefighter Jason Murphy was killed early Friday morning after being struck on his bicycle by a pickup truck. According to sources at 9news.com, the driver of the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup, 49-year-old William Nale, told authorities that he was unable to see Murphy in the marked crosswalk due to the morning sun. The accident happened in Aurora near Summit Elementary School. Aurora Fire says Murphy was on his way to work at 7:30am when he was struck. Murphy passed away shortly after being taken to a local hospital for serious injuries. Police say Nale was cited for careless driving resulting in death and failing to provide proof of insurance. Have you or a loved one been seriously injured in an auto crash and have questions concerning your personal rights? Contact a dedicated Colorado bicycle accident lawyer to evaluate your case. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, several hundred cyclists are killed in traffic accidents every year, and more than one in five deaths is the result of a collision with a vehicle at an intersection. In many cases, the accident occurred because the driver did not see the cyclist. Because cyclists have very little protection, it is important for both the driver, and the cyclist to proceed with caution and pay close attention when entering crossing zones or intersections. Colorado law requires all vehicles to stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk.

The left over ice on residential roads can be extremely dangerous, especially with more snow and cold weather in the forecast. According to 9 News, a vehicle lost control on some ice in a Lakewood neighborhood and hit three young pedestrians. Witnesses claim that the entire street is covered with sheets of ice and when the car attempted to stop, it slid and jumped the curb. The three pedestrians were rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. The police are still investigating the accident but they believe the car did not realize the street was a dead end and had to stop suddenly.  Clearwater pedestrian accident lawyer, Jim Dodson said, “Pedestrian traffic accidents and fatalities have become a dangerous epidemic. When a pedestrian is hurt in an accident, the injuries are often very serious and many times, fatal”. There are no signs in the area indicating a dead end. All thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families for a speedy recovery. Have you or a loved one been seriously injured in an auto crash and have questions concerning your personal rights? Contact a dedicated Colorado pedestrian accident lawyer to evaluate your case. With no where to pile all the recent snow, many just threw it in the streets that were not being plowed. Many residential roads went unplowed after numerous snow storms that eventually compiled into sheets of patchy ice, making it extremely difficult to drive on. With more snow inevitably on its way this winter, make sure to drive with caution, even in low speed areas. Any accident involving a child is tragic, making sure to drive carefully when any amount of snow or ice is on the ground is advisable.
