According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, several thousand people are killed in accidents with large trucks every year. This number is not huge, compared to the number of accidents, but it is certainly far too big for the families who are left to grieve the loss of loved ones. In addition to the fatalities, there are tens of thousands of injuries, and tens of billions of dollars in property damage annually relating to commercial vehicle crashes. One of the difficulties of these accidents is that the commercial trucking companies have dedicated attorneys whose job is to protect the company’s bottom line. In the case of a traffic accident, this often means denying responsibility and paying out as little as possible in insurance claims.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nearly 27,000 people died in 2008 motor vehicle accidents. That averages to 3 deaths every hour and 73 motor vehicle related deaths every day. The NHTSA reports that the total number of deaths on US roads has decreased in the past two years, which may be attributed, in part, to the slow economy as well as to an increase in efforts by local law enforcement to crack down on drunk driving.
