If you have sustained a spinal cord injury in a car crash, you may already have a glimpse of how difficult your life will be. Even if you are not completely paralyzed, your injuries will undoubtedly make life more challenging—and this can result in extreme financial complications for you and your family.

Price Tag of Spinal Cord Injury

So just how much does a spinal cord injury cost? The cost of a spinal cord injury depends largely on the type of injury you suffered, the degree of disability, and the age you are at the time of the accident. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a car accident victim who suffers from high tetraplegia will require at least $1 million in total specialized care during the first year alone. The lifetime cost of a severe spinal cord injury totals well over $4 million over the course of an average lifetime. This figure, while astronomically high, does not even take into consideration other financial burdens, such as:
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of future earnings
  • Pain and suffering
  • Medications
  • Adaptations to your home, such as ramps or lifts
  • Specialized vehicles
  • Wheelchairs and other disability equipment
  • Private health care premiums
  • Out of pocket travel expenses to doctor visits and specialists
  • And more
The more severe your spinal cord injury, the more compensation you will require just to avoid financial ruin. In addition to your lost wages and loss of future earnings, loved ones may be unable to work while they provide round the clock care for you. All of these factors must be considered when seeking compensation in a Denver personal injury lawsuit.

How Much Compensation Should I ask?

Your Denver personal injury lawyer will discuss your prognosis with physicians and healthcare professionals to determine how much compensation you will need to adapt to your new disability. Without a lawyer on your side, insurance companies may attempt to low-ball you and offer you a settlement that is far less than you actually need to recover.

Denver car accident attorney If you are involved in a car accident with one other vehicle, establishing fault is usually a matter of deciding if you or the other driver is to blame for the accident. Occasionally, there may be a third party responsible, such as a government entity or construction road crew. When the accident involves multiple vehicles, however, establishing fault can become increasingly difficult. Multi-vehicle crashes or pileups usually result from a chain reaction. In most multi-vehicle accidents, there may be multiple parties to blame for different components of the accident. You yourself may share some of the blame for the accident or for a portion of the pileup. With so many differing points of view, it can be difficult to establish negligence and know which insurance company to contact. To make matters worse, insurance companies understand these complications and are usually reluctant to reach settlements until the chain of negligence is fully established. To further complicate matters, passengers in varying vehicles may be seeking compensation from all parties responsible or from the driver of the very vehicle they were riding in. As such, you may find yourself seeking compensation from other drivers’ insurance companies and defending yourself from lawsuits at the same time. The complexities that surround multi-vehicle crashes are endless and require a law firm with the resources to fight aggressively for your rights. Insurance companies do not usually reach settlements quickly when there are multiple parties involved and everyone begins pointing fingers at everyone else, in an attempt to reduce their own liabilities. When significant injuries or deaths are involved, the complications become even greater, with much more at stake. Injured accident victims or families who have lost a loved one will need money for medical expenses, lost wages, lost future earnings, pain and suffering, and more. Choosing a lawyer who understands the complications that can arise in a multi-vehicle crash is important to obtaining the compensation you need—and deserve. denver personal injury attorneyCar and motorcycle accidents often occur at lightening speeds and with little warning. The impact from those crashes can leave victims with crushed and broken hands, arms, legs, and feet. While orthopedic surgeons and physicians are usually able repair the majority of broken bones and limbs, there are times when complications and even infections can interfere with the healing process. When this occurs, it may be necessary to remove the injured extremity in an attempt to save the accident victim’s life. After an amputation, accident victims will need to relearn even basic skills, such as walking, driving, or even dressing themselves. In addition, they may be unable to continue in their chosen profession, and be forced to find new lines of employment. It is important to understand the true costs of limb loss before you agree to a settlement. These costs are not always apparent and future expenses, such as prosthetic devices, must be taken into account. A study conducted by John Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy found that the total lifetime costs of amputation was well over a half million dollars. This included costs such as hospitalizations, prosthetics, rehabilitation, therapies, outpatient doctor visits, and pain medications. It did not, however, take into account lost wages, loss of future earnings, or pain and suffering. Prosthetic Devices are Expensive If you have suffered the loss of a limb, you will need to be fitted for a prosthetic. These artificial hands, arms, and legs can be costly and cost between $5,000 and $50,000 depending on their design and material. In addition, being fitted for a prosthetic means additional rehabilitation to learn how to use the new device. It is important to know that these costs are not a one time only cost either. Prosthetic devices are usually changed out every 3-5 years, and this ongoing cost must be taken into account before reaching an appropriate settlement. On nearly every highway and Interstate in Colorado, you will see a large commercial truck. These trucks go by several names, including big rigs, semi-trucks, 18-wheelers, tractor-trailers, and semis. They are found hauling livestock, hazardous chemicals, and produce, and Colorado is a popular destination. These large commercial trucks are 20x the size and weight of the average car on the road, so when disaster strikes, motor vehicle occupants usually suffer severe and often fatal injuries. While there are unique circumstances surrounding each trucking accident, the majority of trucking accidents are caused by:
  • Truck driver error: According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), truck driver error is the cause of the majority of trucking accidents. Truck drivers may drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, drive fatigued, or drive distracted. They may be inexperienced or improperly trained, which could lead to mistakes in handling these large vehicles on the road.
  • Truck equipment failure: Trucking companies are supposed to maintain and inspect their vehicles on a regular basis to ensure that they are safe to operate. Defective tires, failing brakes, or faulty steering components can all lead to devastating accidents.
  • Weather conditions: Poor weather and large commercial trucks generally do not mix. Snow, ice, and rain can make for slippery road surfaces that can be difficult for large trucks to drive on. These trucks are not able to stop as quickly as other vehicles, making bad weather even more risky. When a truck driver does not account for bad weather conditions, trucking accidents occur more frequently.
  • Trucking company negligence: a trucking company has a responsibility to ensure the safety of all those on America’s roads by following the FMCSA trucking rules and regulations. This includes properly maintaining their trucks, not overloading trucks, and making sure that their drivers get frequent rest and adequate sleep. When a trucking company fails to do this, they put everyone in jeopardy. Falsifying driver logs, encouraging drivers to drive longer hours, and failing to fix or repair trucks promptly are all examples of trucking company negligence that could lead to a devastating Denver trucking accident.

Denver Car Accident Lawyer

Auto Accidents and Aggressive Driving

In the United States, there are approximately 6 million car accidents every year. The danger and likelihood of a car accident increases exponentially when people engage in aggressive driving behavior. In fact, statistics show that aggressive driving is at the root of a large number of fatalities and injuries.  Specifically, aggressive driving causes approximately 425,000 fatalities per decade, 35 million injuries per decade and $250 billion per year. With Colorado winter weather conditions making the roads sleek, aggressive driving poses a deadly risk for everyone on the road.

Forms of Aggressive Driving:

There are many different ways in which people engage in aggressive behavior while driving, such as:
  • Running through red lights or stop signs
  • Failing to yield when appropriate
  • Tailgating
  • Failing to use one’s turn signals
  • Making rude or obscene gestures to others on the road or yelling at other drivers
  • Engaging in unsafe behavior around pedestrians
  • Making excessively quick turns around corners
  • Weaving through traffic
  • Making frequent lane changes
  • Driving at excessive speeds in unsafe conditions

What Can Be Done to Avoid Aggressive Drivers?

If you are on the road with aggressive drivers, and chances are good that you will be, you should try your best to avoid them so you can help prevent an accident from occurring. Some ways to keep you and your passengers safe around aggressive drivers are:
  • Slow your speed down and move out of the aggressive driver’s way. Give that driver plenty of room to pass you and others safely.
  • Ignore rude behavior and gestures made by the aggressive driver and avoid encouraging his behavior.
  • Do not challenge the driver in any way or retaliate by engaging in aggressive behavior yourself.
  • Once the situation has passed, report the driver to the proper local authorities and provide the license plate number, make and model of the vehicle and the location of the incident.
If you are unable to avoid an accident due to the conduct of an aggressive driver and are injured as a result, you are entitled to compensation for your injuries. An experienced Colorado personal injury attorney can take action and obtain full compensation for your injuries. If you have been injured in a car accident, contact Denver car accident lawyer John R.
