If you have sustained a spinal cord injury in a car crash, you may already have a glimpse of how difficult your life will be. Even if you are not completely paralyzed, your injuries will undoubtedly make life more challenging—and this can result in extreme financial complications for you and your family.

Price Tag of Spinal Cord Injury

So just how much does a spinal cord injury cost? The cost of a spinal cord injury depends largely on the type of injury you suffered, the degree of disability, and the age you are at the time of the accident. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a car accident victim who suffers from high tetraplegia will require at least $1 million in total specialized care during the first year alone. The lifetime cost of a severe spinal cord injury totals well over $4 million over the course of an average lifetime. This figure, while astronomically high, does not even take into consideration other financial burdens, such as:
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of future earnings
  • Pain and suffering
  • Medications
  • Adaptations to your home, such as ramps or lifts
  • Specialized vehicles
  • Wheelchairs and other disability equipment
  • Private health care premiums
  • Out of pocket travel expenses to doctor visits and specialists
  • And more
The more severe your spinal cord injury, the more compensation you will require just to avoid financial ruin. In addition to your lost wages and loss of future earnings, loved ones may be unable to work while they provide round the clock care for you. All of these factors must be considered when seeking compensation in a Denver personal injury lawsuit.

How Much Compensation Should I ask?

Your Denver personal injury lawyer will discuss your prognosis with physicians and healthcare professionals to determine how much compensation you will need to adapt to your new disability. Without a lawyer on your side, insurance companies may attempt to low-ball you and offer you a settlement that is far less than you actually need to recover.

Denver car accident attorney If you are involved in a car accident with one other vehicle, establishing fault is usually a matter of deciding if you or the other driver is to blame for the accident. Occasionally, there may be a third party responsible, such as a government entity or construction road crew. When the accident involves multiple vehicles, however, establishing fault can become increasingly difficult. Multi-vehicle crashes or pileups usually result from a chain reaction. In most multi-vehicle accidents, there may be multiple parties to blame for different components of the accident. You yourself may share some of the blame for the accident or for a portion of the pileup. With so many differing points of view, it can be difficult to establish negligence and know which insurance company to contact. To make matters worse, insurance companies understand these complications and are usually reluctant to reach settlements until the chain of negligence is fully established. To further complicate matters, passengers in varying vehicles may be seeking compensation from all parties responsible or from the driver of the very vehicle they were riding in. As such, you may find yourself seeking compensation from other drivers’ insurance companies and defending yourself from lawsuits at the same time. The complexities that surround multi-vehicle crashes are endless and require a law firm with the resources to fight aggressively for your rights. Insurance companies do not usually reach settlements quickly when there are multiple parties involved and everyone begins pointing fingers at everyone else, in an attempt to reduce their own liabilities. When significant injuries or deaths are involved, the complications become even greater, with much more at stake. Injured accident victims or families who have lost a loved one will need money for medical expenses, lost wages, lost future earnings, pain and suffering, and more. Choosing a lawyer who understands the complications that can arise in a multi-vehicle crash is important to obtaining the compensation you need—and deserve. denver personal injury attorneyCar and motorcycle accidents often occur at lightening speeds and with little warning. The impact from those crashes can leave victims with crushed and broken hands, arms, legs, and feet. While orthopedic surgeons and physicians are usually able repair the majority of broken bones and limbs, there are times when complications and even infections can interfere with the healing process. When this occurs, it may be necessary to remove the injured extremity in an attempt to save the accident victim’s life. After an amputation, accident victims will need to relearn even basic skills, such as walking, driving, or even dressing themselves. In addition, they may be unable to continue in their chosen profession, and be forced to find new lines of employment. It is important to understand the true costs of limb loss before you agree to a settlement. These costs are not always apparent and future expenses, such as prosthetic devices, must be taken into account. A study conducted by John Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy found that the total lifetime costs of amputation was well over a half million dollars. This included costs such as hospitalizations, prosthetics, rehabilitation, therapies, outpatient doctor visits, and pain medications. It did not, however, take into account lost wages, loss of future earnings, or pain and suffering. Prosthetic Devices are Expensive If you have suffered the loss of a limb, you will need to be fitted for a prosthetic. These artificial hands, arms, and legs can be costly and cost between $5,000 and $50,000 depending on their design and material. In addition, being fitted for a prosthetic means additional rehabilitation to learn how to use the new device. It is important to know that these costs are not a one time only cost either. Prosthetic devices are usually changed out every 3-5 years, and this ongoing cost must be taken into account before reaching an appropriate settlement. Denver Motorcycle Accident AttorneyFor some Denver bikers, winter riding is simply not an option. When the weather gets bad, they put their bike in the garage for hibernation until the first signs of spring. Yet, it doesn’t have to be that way.

With the right gear, some common sense, and a few minor changes to your riding style, you can enjoy riding your motorcycle safely through all but the worst of the winter weather. Riding during the winter is really more a matter of road conditions than the temperature. When the roads are really bad, however, the best advice is probably not to ride. Winter riding can be particularly treacherous and can lead to devastating Denver motorcycle accidents, but if you must ride, follow these motorcycle safety tips.

Invest in special winter riding gear: One-piece leathers are the top of the line and highly recommended, but definitely dress in layers. Look for some thermally efficient, waterproof gloves to keep your hands comfortable and nimble on the controls.

Respect the winter roads: You will experience less traction on winter roads, as well as being challenged by wind and precipitation. Give yourself extra space behind other vehicles to minimize spray from them. Be cautious of black ice and slick road conditions by allowing yourself more breaking distance. If you have a long drive, plan to stop periodically to warm up.

Consider your vision and visibility: Bad weather such as fog or even low winter sun can restrict your view. Be aware of the hazards and adjust your riding style to suit the road conditions. It is also important to increase your visibility to other drivers. Wear reflective clothing and use other drivers’ mirrors to make visual contact with them.

Make sure your bike is in optimal riding condition: Check all lights to make sure they are working. Make sure they are visible and keep them free of dirt and grime. Use turn signals early to alert drivers and pedestrians to your intentions. Make sure your tires are properly inflated and use anti-misting spray on your visor and mirrors.

Help keep Colorado roads safe by following these tips and riding defensively. According to the NHTSA, over 100,000 motorcycles are involved in accidents on Colorado roads every year.

Unfortunately, even when you take all the necessary precautions and drive carefully, Denver motorcycle accidents still occur. Denver drivers do not always take winter weather seriously, and as a result, they put themselves and everyone around them at risk.

According to NBC11 news, a woman was injured in a Colorado motorcycling accident on Sunday. The motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 65, near where Lands End Road meets Highway 65. The driver of the motorcycle, Maryann Arter, was riding with a group of motorcyclists when she lost control of her motorcycle, hit the brakes, and skid 185 feet, before being ejected from her bike. She was airlifted immediately to a local hospital with arm and head injuries. According to reports, she only had a learner’s permit for the motorcycle and she was not wearing a helmet at the time of the Colorado motorcycle crash. Even though Colorado law does not require all Colorado motorcyclists to wear helmets, it is certainly in the driver’s best interest to. Motorcycle helmets significantly reduce the risk of serious motorcycle injuries—including traumatic head injuries that can lead to a lifetime of disabilities, pain, and suffering. The month of May is Motorcycle safety awareness month. It is a campaign by the NHTSA to remind drivers to be cognizant of motorcycle riders during the busier summer riding months. Riding a motorcycle is a rewarding experience – offering both a sense of freedom as well as unparalleled views of the world around us. Unfortunately, this reward comes with significant risks. According to the NHTSA, there were over 5000 motorcycle riders killed in 2008 and 96,000 injured. In 2009, Colorado accidents claimed the lives of nearly 90 motorcycle riders, accounting for almost 20% of ALL traffic fatalities in the state. When motorcycle accidents do occur, the injuries can be significant. In addition to road rash, riders involved in accidents suffer strained muscles and joints, broken bones, brain injuries, and in some cases paralysis. These injuries can require extensive medical treatment and long recovery periods. The costs associated with these injuries can be tremendous. The Colorado State Patrol says two police officers were injured in a motorcycle accident while taking a motorcycle training class on Thursday. The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. yesterday on Westbound C-470 near Ken Caryl. According to 9news.com, officers from the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department were participating in a weeklong motorcycle training course and had just returned from lunch when the motorcycle accident occurred. Both officers were transported to Swedish medical Center. They are reported to have non life-threatening injuries. It is no secret that motorcycle riding is far more dangerous than riding in a car. Motorcycle riders have very little to protect them from other vehicles and the road other than their clothes, and sometimes a helmet and leather riding gear. Colorado law does not require motorcycle riders to wear a motorcycle helmet, though motorcycle survival rates are higher when the rider is wearing a helmet. If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a motorcycle accident, you may want to consider speaking to a Denver motorcycle injury attorney. If the accident was the result of the negligence of another, you may be able to recover money for medical bills, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering.
