As reported by KDVR Fox31 News, a pregnant woman and her husband escaped with only minor injuries when their car collided with a school bus in Denver on April 19th, 2011. The school bus accident occurred at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Zuni when the bus driver turned in front of the subcompact car carrying the unidentified couple. The car lodged under the rear of the bus by force of the collision, yet the six-months-pregnant woman was miraculously uninjured, and the father-to-be suffered only cuts to the head and forearm. The bus driver was cited by police for failing to yield right-of-way. Luckily, the bus was not carrying any students at the time of the Denver accident. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been at least 72 annual fatalities and an unknown number of injuries caused by these large vehicles with poor visibility. Worse, although media reports properly focus on children injured or killed by bus crashes, it appears that many of the fatalities and injuries are suffered by motorists during accidents with buses, including a worrisome number here in Colorado. If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident with a large commercial vehicle in the Denver area, whether a school bus, commercial bus or other large vehicle, you should seek help from an experienced Denver personal injury attorney. Auto Accidents and Aggressive Driving

In the United States, there are approximately 6 million car accidents every year. The danger and likelihood of a car accident increases exponentially when people engage in aggressive driving behavior. In fact, statistics show that aggressive driving is at the root of a large number of fatalities and injuries.  Specifically, aggressive driving causes approximately 425,000 fatalities per decade, 35 million injuries per decade and $250 billion per year. With Colorado winter weather conditions making the roads sleek, aggressive driving poses a deadly risk for everyone on the road.

Forms of Aggressive Driving:

There are many different ways in which people engage in aggressive behavior while driving, such as:
  • Running through red lights or stop signs
  • Failing to yield when appropriate
  • Tailgating
  • Failing to use one’s turn signals
  • Making rude or obscene gestures to others on the road or yelling at other drivers
  • Engaging in unsafe behavior around pedestrians
  • Making excessively quick turns around corners
  • Weaving through traffic
  • Making frequent lane changes
  • Driving at excessive speeds in unsafe conditions

What Can Be Done to Avoid Aggressive Drivers?

If you are on the road with aggressive drivers, and chances are good that you will be, you should try your best to avoid them so you can help prevent an accident from occurring. Some ways to keep you and your passengers safe around aggressive drivers are:
  • Slow your speed down and move out of the aggressive driver’s way. Give that driver plenty of room to pass you and others safely.
  • Ignore rude behavior and gestures made by the aggressive driver and avoid encouraging his behavior.
  • Do not challenge the driver in any way or retaliate by engaging in aggressive behavior yourself.
  • Once the situation has passed, report the driver to the proper local authorities and provide the license plate number, make and model of the vehicle and the location of the incident.
If you are unable to avoid an accident due to the conduct of an aggressive driver and are injured as a result, you are entitled to compensation for your injuries. An experienced Colorado personal injury attorney can take action and obtain full compensation for your injuries. If you have been injured in a car accident, contact Denver car accident lawyer John R. A truck driver from Texas, Richard E. Widmier, “will be sentenced Nov.12 in the deaths of Ginger M. Gillespie, 48, and Lois A. Kelton, 77, according to a news release from the 18th Judicial District.” According to an article from The Denver Post, Widmier was not suspected of driving under the influence but was driving too fast for road conditions on the day of the accident. The accident took place on I-70 west of Limon during an April 2009 blizzard.  Both victims died at the scene of the accident. Widmier pled guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nearly 27,000 people died in 2008 motor vehicle accidents. That averages to 3 deaths every hour and 73 motor vehicle related deaths every day. The NHTSA reports that the total number of deaths on US roads has decreased in the past two years, which may be attributed, in part, to the slow economy as well as to an increase in efforts by local law enforcement to crack down on drunk driving. Losing a loved one to an automobile accident is a true tragedy. If you are facing such a tragedy, you need to speak to a Denver personal injury attorney about all your legal options.
