Charles Nelson Douglas will spend the next 12 years of his life in prison for a crash that critically injured a Commerce City police officer in 2003. The officer, Juan Lopez, was directing traffic at Colorado 76 and 88th
Avenue when struck by Douglas’ car. Douglas was drunk at the time and according to an article posted at DenverPost.com
was found “guilty of vehicular assault resulting from driving under the influence” by a jury in July of 2005. Douglas failed to show for his sentencing later that year and had eluded police until May of this year. Douglas was arrested at the border of Mexico while attempting to leave the country.
