Aurora firefighter Jason Murphy was killed early Friday morning after being struck on his bicycle by a pickup truck. According to sources at 9news.com, the driver of the 2002 Dodge Ram pickup, 49-year-old William Nale, told authorities that he was unable to see Murphy in the marked crosswalk due to the morning sun. The accident happened in Aurora near Summit Elementary School. Aurora Fire says Murphy was on his way to work at 7:30am when he was struck. Murphy passed away shortly after being taken to a local hospital for serious injuries. Police say Nale was cited for careless driving resulting in death and failing to provide proof of insurance. Have you or a loved one been seriously injured in an auto crash and have questions concerning your personal rights? Contact a dedicated Colorado bicycle accident lawyer to evaluate your case. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, several hundred cyclists are killed in traffic accidents every year, and more than one in five deaths is the result of a collision with a vehicle at an intersection. In many cases, the accident occurred because the driver did not see the cyclist. Because cyclists have very little protection, it is important for both the driver, and the cyclist to proceed with caution and pay close attention when entering crossing zones or intersections. Colorado law requires all vehicles to stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk.

A friendly get-together between two families in Wisconsin turned tragic Wednesday when a four-year-old girl was attacked and killed by the family dog. 7News is reporting that the girl and her family had visited the home and the dog many times before. The dog, a male boxer, and the girl were alone when the incident happened so no one knows what prompted the attack. A passing neighbor saw the attack from the road and alerted the family who then called 911. The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The dog was euthanized. According to Dogbitelaw.com, a recent study showed that 1,000 Americans are treated daily in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites. In 2007 there were 33 fatal dog attacks in the United States. Most dog bite victims who receive medical attention are children with facial injuries. A dog bite is often a traumatic and scary event—–especially for young children. A child’s small stature makes him especially vulnerable to head, neck and facial injuries including severe facial fractures, permanent scarring, nerve damage and life threatening head injuries. A large dog can easily break a child’s bones and their powerful jaws are capable of causing serious puncture wounds to the face, neck and head. If someone you love was killed by a dog, it is important to know that Colorado’s dog laws are on your side. You do not have to face the future with uncertainty—contact a Colorado dog bite attorney today. CBS4Denver.com has reported that a “wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Denver Wednesday by relatives of a Denver family killed on Thanksgiving Day in 2008 by leaking carbon monoxide.” The family was staying in a vacation home in Aspen at the time, part of a package deal they purchased in a charity auction for their kid’s school. Lawyers for the family allege that several people are responsible for the failures that contributed to their deaths, including the “owner of a plumbing company and two local building inspectors recently indicted in a separate criminal action.” The family hopes the lawsuit will prevent future deaths and will hold those accountable responsible. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are 15,000 emergency room visits and 500 deaths due to unintentional CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning in the US every year. The CDC reports that the symptoms most associated with CO poisoning are headaches, nausea, dizziness and mental confusion. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is encouraged to contact emergency crews immediately. Charles Nelson Douglas will spend the next 12 years of his life in prison for a crash that critically injured a Commerce City police officer in 2003. Douglas was drunk at the time and according to an article posted at DenverPost.com was found “guilty of vehicular assault resulting from driving under the influence” by a jury in July of 2005.
