A Greeley teenager was killed Sunday when his sister accidentally fired a handgun inside their home. According to the Denver Post, the shooting happened just before five p.m. at a home in the 1400 block of 8th street. Police were called to the home on a report of a shot fired, but by the time officers and medical help arrived the boy had been rushed by family to the North Colorado Medical Center. Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, a Greeley Police Department spokesman, said the teenage sister picked up the loaded handgun from the kitchen counter and somehow caused the handgun to discharged. The lone shot hit her 15-year-old brother who was sitting on a couch in a nearby room. “It is apparently an accidental shooting,” Tymkowych said. “We don’t have anything to consider it otherwise.” What are the statistics related to young people and firearm deaths and injuries? According to the University of Michigan Health System, in 1999, 3,385 children and youth ages 0-19 years were killed by guns. This includes homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. This is equivalent to about 9 deaths per day. Of the total firearms-related deaths, 2,896 were 15-19 year-olds.
